The Bureau of Land Management is reminding people to comply with seasonal closures at Emerald Mountain near Steamboat Springs.

The closures are in place to protect wintering and calving elk, according to a Little Snake Field Office news release.

All areas south of the Ridge Trail in BLM’s Emerald Mountain Special Recreation Area are closed to human entry from Dec. 1 to June 30.

The closure includes the Beall Trail and Kemray Draw, as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife lands to the east and the Humble Ranch property located southeast of the Emerald Mountain recreation area.

“We are seeing a number of violations of this closure this winter, which could have significant impact on the elk in this area,” said BLM Little Snake Field Manager Wendy Reynolds in the release. “However, the Ridge and Rotary Trails remain open year-round for those wishing to visit Emerald Mountain before July 1.”

Violators of the closure face citations and a minimum $175 fine.
