Hundreds of bird species migrate through eastern Colorado each year, but the migration of tens of thousands of snow geese makes for a dramatic sight.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Lamar Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to celebrate the migration with the 11th annual High Plains Snow Goose Festival.

The four-day event kicks off Feb. 21 and features an array of family friendly activities, including live music, field trips, educational booths, lectures, historical tours, and arts and crafts, according to a Parks and Wildlife news release.

A weekend registration fee of $15 is required for participants; program costs vary from $10 to $25.

“The main stars of the festival are the snow geese,” John Koshak, a watchable wildlife coordinator with Parks and Wildlife, said in the release. “An early Sunday morning bus tour will take festival-goers to watch approximately 25,000 honking geese lift off from local reservoirs and fly to their daytime feeding grounds.”

Participants also may get the opportunity to view other bird and wildlife species, including bald eagles, hawks, porcupines, owls, coyotes and foxes.
