ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says it has been working with several outdoors and hunting groups to plant apple trees and establish better habitat for game and nongame wildlife species in the central Upper Peninsula.
The DNR said Monday that the project has drawn on help from the Bays de Noc Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Wildlife Unlimited of Delta County and Upper Peninsula Whitetails of Delta County.
The plantings have been in the Escanaba area.
DNR wildlife technician Vernon Richardson says the department has “a history of collaborating with local wildlife groups.”
The department says volunteers spent several days planting 100 trees in Delta County. Afterward, it says areas were plowed and planted with rye or a wildlife mix.
