Aspen — Wildlife officials are warning campers and hikers that dry conditions in Colorado may mean increased bear activity.
Mike Porras, a spokesman for the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife, last week said that low snowpack and scant precipitation may lead to poor crops of natural bear food in the mountains. That means more of the animals might forage in open trash cans and homes.
The U.S. Forest Service has temporarily banned the use of tents and fabric trailers or campers in one campground near Aspen following multiple sightings of a black bear there this month.
The bear was sighted at Difficult Campground, about six miles east of Aspen, prompting the temporary ban.
